Actions and means involved

The project will consist on more phases and a number of actions within them. 

Developing a treatment process for recycling aglomerated stones sludges : 
  • Execution of laboratory tests for material characterisation. This phase foresees physical, chemical, size particles and high temperature tests for characterizing the 2 kinds of sludges and understand their behaviour at different conditions. This activity will be carried out at the start of the project to define the necessary processes, and later on in order to check the coherence of optained parameters in laboratory and pilot trial with the set target values.
  • Definition of treatment processes on laboratory-scale for inerting carbonate-calcium sludge ( A ) and bleaching silicate sludges ( B ). Once the characterisation tests have defined temperature and pressure values, the project will enter the phase aimed at reproduction of processing procedures at lab scale in order to define procedures and parameters needed to size and arrange equipments suitable to process the sludge at pre-industrial scale Pilot valorisation of sludges for their re-use in the agglomerated stone industry and in other sectors.
Pilot plant design and assembly. The plant will be sized for treating about 5 tons of type-A sludge per hour (40 tons/day) for 20 monthly working days. 
  • The pilot plant will be constructed in Cacciano di Masserano (Biella) in a 400rn2 already existing shed owned by Minerali Industriali. The type-B sludge will be treated on pilot scale in an existing plant, which will be calibrated to this end. Two distinct processes are foreseen for the forementioned type A and type B sludge: type-A sludge will undergo a process aimed at pulling down the potentially harmful substances present in the smokes, particularly the above mentioned styrene and it will be dried. The type-B will be treated in the drying kiln in order to obtain a dried filler, and will be bleached. 
  • Pilot Plant start-up and experimental production of end-products. The pilot plant will be operational for 6 months and will be able to produce about 4000 tons of treated type-A sludge and 1000 tons of treated type-B sludge. The obtained products will be sent to the associated partner Santamargherita for being tested as filler into the slabs processing and to other potential end-users so that they can industrially test them verifying the technical and economic features of the obtained products. 
  • Analysis and demonstrations of end-products' application domains. The end-products derived from the processing of stone sludges into the pilot plant will be presented for preindustrial testing to potential end-users of the building industry (cement), batching plants (asphalt), paper mills and agglomerated stones industry. Other sectors for potential application will be also explored during this action. The test results will be carefully evaluated according to parameters agreed upon with the end-users themselves, Demonstration actions are foreseen in Italy and Europe-wide, and will be carried out with support of members of the Agglomerated Stones Association of Europe. 
Dissemination and communication activities. 
  • In this phase a series of transversal actions are developed aimed at disseminating the project results to the main end-user sectors and sector-related stakeholders in Europe, to the general public and to public authorities.
